Kōtukutuku Kaleidoscope -

Comet Collab

(Bobbie Gray, Lara Thomas and Ed Aretino)

Kōtukutuku Kaleidoscope features 48 larger-than-life fuchsia flowers, crafted from multitudes of single-use plastic bottles, each adorned with LEDs programmed to mimic the colourful pollination cycle of our native tree fuchsia.

Suspended in clusters of 3 from a central 'chandelier,' these radiant blooms captivate viewers with their dynamic luminosity. As visitors stand beneath, a thermal sensor activates the lights, orchestrating a mesmerising display. Viewers effectively act as pollinators, prompting the flowers to play out their radiant pollination process. Complementing this visual spectacle, wash lights adorn the surrounding canopy, while a soundscape of Kōtukutuku’s pollinating birds—Bellbird, Tui, and Silvereye—fills the air.

Kōtukutuku Kaleidoscope highlights both Aotearoa's rich natural heritage and the issue of plastic waste, urging viewers to reflect on the state of our precious natural environment. This fusion of art and sustainability stands as a testament to creativity, as discarded plastic bottles are reimagined to evoke the vibrant hues of New Zealand's native fuchsia. .
